Performance Opportunities

The Glenn Gould School provides numerous performance opportunities within the School and within the community.

Whether performing under the baton of internationally acclaimed conductors with the Royal Conservatory Orchestra, as part of a chamber music ensemble, with the opera workshop or in master class, Glenn Gould School students can perform in a wide variety of settings.

Ensembles


Royal Conservatory Orchestra

The Royal Conservatory Orchestra is an essential part of the program for all Glenn Gould School orchestral students. Placement auditions are held in September. Conductors rehearse the orchestra under intense, professional conditions.

Past RCO guest conductors include Peter Oundjian (Music Director, Toronto Symphony Orchestra), Richard Bradshaw (former General Director, Canadian Opera Company), Bramwell Tovey (Music Director, Vancouver Symphony Orchestra), Yoav Talmi (Artistic Director and Conductor, Quebec Symphony Orchestra), Tania Miller (Music Director, Victoria Symphony), and Alistair Neale (Principal Guest Conductor, New World Symphony). Guest conductors slated for the 2009/10 season include Peter Oundjian, Leon Fleisher, and Johannes Debus (Music Director, Canadian Opera Company).

Chamber Music

Chamber music is integral to The Glenn Gould School's curriculum. Numerous performance opportunities exist at The RCM, at off-site venues, and as part of outreach programming; students are often engaged by local and regional concert presenters. In the past, Glenn Gould School students have participated in concert series at Roy Thomson Hall (Noon Hour Concerts), The Arts and Letters Club, Toronto Music Garden, Stratford Summer Music, Music at Cookstown and Barrie's "Colours of Music" Festival.

Opera Workshop is an intensive full-year course, culminating in a full opera production in the spring. Recent works performed include:
In 2009/10, The GGS will present Martinů’s Comedy on the Bridge on November 25/26, 2009 directed by Brent Krysa and conducted by Uri Mayer, and Massenet’s Cendrillon on March 20/21/23/ 25, 2010, directed by Graham Cozzubo and conducted by Uri Mayer.

Under the director of conductor/composer Brian Current, the Glenn Gould School New Music Ensemble examines representative 20th Century ensemble literature, including Canadian works. The Ensemble performs regularly in the Royal Conservatory of Music and on the Canadian Opera Company’s Richard Bradshaw Amphitheater Concert Series. Past works performed include:

The RCO Concerto Competition and Tom Thomas Scholarship

Each year, The Glenn Gould School administers The RCO Concerto Competition and Tom Thomas Scholarship for current students. Two winners are each awarded the opportunity to perform with the Royal Conservatory Orchestra and a cash prize.

Freelance Engagements

The Glenn Gould School is approached regularly by members of the public looking for musicians to play at weddings, corporate events, and more. Students who wish to take advantage of these opportunities are encouraged to join the Musicians for Hire list.

Master Classes

The Master Class program is a vital part of the curriculum at The Glenn Gould School. The School presents over 100 master classes annually by internationally acclaimed guest artists and faculty such as Leon Fleisher, Robert McDonald, Regina Resnik, Warren Jones, Jeanne Baxtresser, Julie Landsman, Timothy Eddy, Kim Kashkashian, Camilla Wicks and George Crumb.

Outreach

The Glenn Gould School actively seeks performing opportunities for students outside of The Royal Conservatory of Music. Often these performances will pay a small honorarium. In the past, The Glenn Gould School has participated in concert series at the Canadian Opera Company’s Richard Bradshaw Amphitheatre, the Arts and Letters Club, Barrie's "Colours of Music", the Royal Ontario Museum, the Art Gallery of Ontario and Stratford Summer Music. Students are chosen at the discretion of the administration.
