Alumni Win Awards Worldwide

Rolston String Quartet

May has been a magnificent month for students and alumni of The Royal Conservatory. Over the last few weeks alumni earned prizes for their exemplary performances of contemporary repertoire, while others showed off their piano prowess at a prestigious national competition.

Alumni Take Top Two Prizes at E-Gré National Competition

Composer and pianist Matt Poon won the top prize at the Eckhart-Gramatté National Music Competition, Canada's leading annual competition for the performance of contemporary music. The Toronto native earned a $10,000 cash prize, a three-week residency and debut recital at Italy's Casalmaggiore International Musical Festival, and national tour. Pianist Naomi Woo won the second prize, earning $5,000. Both Mr. Poon and Ms. Woo studied music through The Royal Conservatory Certificate Program.

Alumni Sweep Shean Piano Competition

Our alumni impressed at the 2016 edition of the Shean Piano Competition, held in Edmonton from May 19–21. Four Royal Conservatory alumni won prizes: British Columbia natives and Certificate Program alumni Jocelyn Lai, Carter Johnson, and Natalie Lo won the second, third, and fourth prizes, respectively, while Glenn Gould School student and Sydney, Australia native Chris Au won the fifth place prize. Two-thirds of the finalists of this biennial competition had a Royal Conservatory connection.

Quartet Brings Home Prize from Bordeaux

The alumni of the Rolston Quartet won a special prize at the 8th Bordeaux International String Quartet Competition, held in the French city from May 2-8. The prize of € 4,000 was awarded for the best rendition of a work by composer Lucien Durosoir. Every member of the quartet is an alumnus of The Royal Conservatory: violinist Luri  Lee, violist Hezekiah Leung, and cellist Jonathan Lo all studied at The Glenn Gould School; violinist Jeffrey Dyrda studied music through The Royal Conservatory Certificate Program.
